I'd like to have B4 for myself for a bit. Homeland of my tribe and all, just want to get a certain island out of the way. Well, E5 and E6 within B4.

I've got a good idea for the wastes of Indianapolis.... and two divergent factions, and their now-mythic past.

To repeat a post from the other thread: the idea here is not to claim a grid square. Those grid refs are purely for locational purposes, so folks know where on the map (approximately) your entry is, if it's something stationary like a nation or a mountain. Everyone playing can choose, if they want, to have an entry dealing with B4 on the same turn.

If that happens, and the entries conflict, we'll resolve it in... a way yet to be determined. :D

One question - I have an idea for an entry (as in a certain type of organization active in the post-apocalyptic world), however, this idea is something I would also incorporate into a story I am thinking of now. Would you be OK with the entry as is, or would you rather see it altered to where when it shows up in an unrelated story (if I ever write it), it is called something different, and has different basic description etc?

I know...it's just important that I can have an entry on my home quickly...

Should we try to put together a timeline up to 2120, at least a reference for technological concerns? Otherwise I'm going to follow Orion's Arm, and I know how some people feel about that universe.

How outlandish are we going?

I mean, the ideas I've got aren't really all too far out there- think the more restrained stuff in Fallout.

Though I do have an idea I don't think anyone else would have gotten- a Hispanic "homeland" in the Midwest.

Razor Swarm: A massive coglomeration of advanced micro-technology that can strip a region bare in days. Each component is about the size of a large wasp, and is capable of recreating itself, with enough time and materials. There are really only two options when a swarm is seen in the area, run, or hide; neither of which is very successful. Vast swaths of Nourika have been laid to waste by these Swarms, people tend to stay away from these places for decades, on the fear that the Swarm might come back.

Whatever you want. If you plan to use the same idea in a story you might publish, I'd suggest using a different name for it here.

You can if you want to, but don't expect it to be canon. I'd rather not delve too deeply into the causes and events of the Apocalypse until we get some solid data on what's around now.

Like I said in the other thread, try to keep it in the spirit of Planet of the Apes or Canticle for Liebowitz. Fallout type stuff should be fine.

General note:

We'll start posting entries on Saturday. I want to give everyone who wants to a chance to sign up between now and then. Saturday morning I'll randomly assign turns, and then, in order, you can make your first entries.

The first person has three days to make their entry, then the following person has three days from the time the last person made their entry. You don't have to wait three days to make your entry when its your turn, I"m just allowing UP TO three days for those of us that can't flog their imaginations quite as fast. :D

Planet of the Apes?

Haggis, all I have to say is Radiant City GO!

Diamond, a question- are we regarding this encyclopedia as an in-universe work (as in, compiled by some force in the world from local sorces, or as a silent Watcher recording from above?)

That's a good question - how would you guys prefer to do it? 'Outside recorder' has the benefit of conveying 'authentic' information, but in-universe would perhaps give a lot more local color. I tend to lean towards 'outside recorder', personally. Or, you could do one or the other, or both, maybe with a little notice at the beginning of the entry stating which style it's done in.

And what's wrong with Planet of the Apes? Although I guess I really mean Beneath the Planet of the Apes - you know, the A-bomb worshipping mutants in the ruins of NYC...

I say both.

Have some entries be considered 'outside recorder' but have a few that are made by, uh, 'Academics of the Church of the Shining Star, located in the Serene Republic of Wah-Shing-Ton, on behalf of His Excellency Kee-Rok III, who, in the year 569 of the Republic, was charged to set forth and gather information on the lands within 200 leagues of the Capital so that All shall learn and embrace the Word'.

And I think I just got another idea for an entry.

HueyLong

Wasn't saying there was a problem with Planet of the Apes. Was referring to a project Haggis and I almost pursued called Radiant City, which had a bit of apes gone wild in an urban area. (And was an art deco nuclear chic setting....)

I think in-universe recorder would give more flexibility with the writers. Because they could chalk it up to an unreliable source.

The typical time is three days.

Diamond

Did no one read the rules? Oy.

Yes. Three days from when the last person posted, or failing that, three days from when the last person's deadline was. In this case, Influenza had three days to post, and did not, so it goes to the next person at the end of the deadline. Which is now. Easy way to tell is look at when the last person posted. The next person has 72 hours from then.

Hey GBW -- roughly how much territory does Usa cover? Just trying to see if it will interfere with the borders of some other territories I'm toying with creating.

Diamond
06-05-2009, 06:00 PM
Yeah, Bruno brings up a good point there. We should really try to nail down at least an approximation of how much territory the various nations take up, so that other folks know what's where, and when I update the map I'll know what's what.

GBW
06-05-2009, 07:59 PM
Thanks guys. :)

I'll try and give the approximation of the borders of the Usa Nation, since it doesn't conform exactly to existing state borders. The description will also include the DeeCee Wastes.

It consists of the Maryland counties of Harford, Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Prince Georges, Montgomery, Carroll, Frederick and Washington; the District of Columbia (naturally); the West Virginia counties of Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan; the Virginia counties of Loudoun, Clark, Frederick, Warren, Shenandoah, Page, Rockingham and Augusta. Its northern border approximates the Pennsylvania-Maryland border at this point.

Sucks that we have to wait five more days for people who are almost certainly not going to post anything, but fair's fair, I guess...

For future turns what I'm going to do is include people who entered the last round. Anyone who wants to join that round will have a one day grace period after I post the turn order list. At the end of the grace period, I'll re-randomize the turn order. Anyone who wants to join the round after that will be tacked onto the end like I did this time. I'm also going to post the new round turn orders in this thread instead of the Entries thread.

Was it a nuclear war that destroyed the world, or something else?

Bruno
06-07-2009, 08:29 PM
Was it a nuclear war that destroyed the world, or something else?

That's deliberately left vague. It could have been a nuclear war or a plague or natural disaster or any combination or permutation you wish. All that's really known for sure is that the world came to a really spectacular end a few centuries earlier and all records are rather vague, fragmentary and even a bit contradictory.

Diamond
06-07-2009, 09:20 PM
My thought was that as we get more and more written on the world as it exists in 2520, we'll be able to weave it all together and eventually compile a history. I thought that if we tried to define from the beginning exactly what happened to end modern society, we might A)write ourselves into a corner, B)stifle creativity since deciding on an exact 'end' might preclude some entries, and C)make people try to shoehorn stuff in that they might otherwise not have wanted to write. I think this way will be more challenging to tie everything together, but ultimately it will be more fun and the end product will have a more organic feel to it.

Diamond

About 10,000 population each with the the occasional city with more population - Burlingville and Keen as examples. And the Ash Lands are pretty much all of mainland Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

It's Brendon's turn now.

Used a few of your ideas for my entry, btw. Looking forward to everyone else's stuff.

Does anybody here know any good sites on old airplanes/gliders/etc? I have an idea for a future entry but it needs a bit more research.

I'm interested in seeing it.

Here's (http://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/aircraft-1900-1909.asp) a site about aircraft from before World War I to the near future.

And here's (http://www.sailplanedirectory.com/ndxtype.htm) an index of sailplanes.

Heh--well, now you know what to write for your next entry...;)

The problem is, I have too many ideas for new entries.

Most of the stuff I cut from my previous entry was about the legends surrounding Hadrian of the Grey Order and the interpretations of his writings, and even though I do intend to elaborate on those things in my next entry, I've got at least four more ideas I'd like to work out...

One's about the heavily syncretic Mayan Church mentioned in the entry about the Heterodox Church, the second is about the Roman Catholic Church in Mexico after the Time of Troubles (liberation theology + gangsters turned Crusaders, a reinstated Inquisition, and a long history of conflicts with everything ranging from despotic landowners turned feudal lords to gangsters turned cultists and Muslimfundamentalist Mayans), the third is about Mexico City itself (how about this ruined city being rebuilt into... something by an AI-machine complex that is, at best, completely indifferent to human beings?), and the fourth is about the so-called 'corpos' (from 'corporations'); generally rather small organisations of bandits, mercenaries, bounty hunters, slavers and scavengers - think of the Smokers from Waterworld, but then on a smaller scale.

And then there's also a few other ideas I'd like to work out, such as slavery in Nourika, the concept of breeding mutants, and the existence of huge 'installations' (like Radiant Peaks and the Archimedes complex from Sir Ironside's latest entry) that have been defunct ever since the people who had the knowledge, expertise and authorisation to operate them died out...

Damn cool entry, Ran! We seem to have a shitload of religions so far; might be cool to do an entry on a past (or present) holy war...

You know, I had a few ideas about the Reconstituted Nourikan Catholic Church and the Southern Orthodox Church have a long history of conflicts and serious tensions...

Sir Ironside
07-02-2009, 01:12 PM
Radiant Peaks?

Ran Exilis
07-02-2009, 01:19 PM
Radiant Peaks?

One of the things mentioned in the depths of my entry about the Heterodox Church.

Several hundreds of miles to the north, there is also the Radiant Peaks Commune, a religious community that is known to be part of the Heterodox Church.

The Radiant Peaks Commune deserves special mention, as all members of this reclusive community dwell in an ancient installation[2] known as the Radiant Peaks, and have earned themselves the reputation of being the most skillful mutant-breeders in the entire region. They have produced remarkable breeds such as the Thinkerers, a breed of docile mutants with exceptional memorization and analytical skills. Both the Southern Orthodox and Reconstituted Nourikan Catholic Churches, as well as the wealthier organisations and petty states, continue to make extensive use of the remarkable skills of these purebreed mutants.

I've got a few ideas myself, one of them being a general fauna entry on the Greater Tehasi Devil Weasel and another idea centered around the Great Skag Way, analogous to the Silk Road but with more opium running from the Jeanji Market in Chattanoogaland to some undecided point on the Pacific Ocean.

Though it probably has a few branches terminating in other major trade areas, like Chilango.

Well, a lot of knowledge was lost in the Yawm ad-Din and his name itself was lost in the transition. The Sayedid version sticks more to the divine aspects of Islam, while the Strugglers have kept every scrap of Islamic history they could recover including the knowledge of a Prophet.

If the Recyclers are a secret society, they probably would have only inklings of their existence, right? As for wandering entertainers, they'd probably be allowed to pursue their trade within the Caliphate but would be frowned upon if they lingered too long.

Bad Real Life! Bad! Bad!

Guess it's Haggis up...

Ok, now to the esteemed Nekromans the Younger, who shall (I'm sure) dazzle us with his Post-Apocalyptic Acumen.

Or not. :)

You are little buddy.

Also, Dope Hogs, check it out.

...lemme get this right; it's a breed of mutant, killer pigs.

And they're propably the most dangerous even-toed animals North America saw since the extinction of the entelodonts.

And their entire species is on drugs...

..

Giant. Killer. Pigs. On. Drugs.

Haggis, that's officially one of the most awesome things I've seen in a long time.

Has anybody claimed Chicago and its environs yet?

Bruno

Nice entry man - like the way everything is slowly tieing together.

Guess it's me up next, huh?

Ironside, why would the Dope Hogs recognize the C banner of the Circuit? They're animals.

They are smart animals, and the use of Pavlovian conditioning by Archimedes' robot minions.

The entire species?

The entire species?

Mostly on the well traveled routes. Archimedes spent a few decades finding a mix of scents that the Dope Hogs hate, but don't bother others. For Dope Hogs that are found in menageries, there is a quickly administered counter-agent.

Ok - might be a bit close - but yeah, something will be up tomorrow night. Little burnt out lately from insomnia.

Brilliant as always Bruno! For a moment I almost wondered if Storm Riders had anything to do with Iced Earth album "Night Of The Stormrider". A bit of trivia - Stormrider was my Internet/MSN nick for a while :)

Thanks guys!

Was a bit worried about this one - didn't have quite the amount of time that I would have liked to have had - but it came out nice in the end.

I really like the fact that a Doors song is an 'ancient warrior song' and this part still makes me giggle:

I had just sat down to eat and go through my notes – noting with some dismay that the notes for the latter part of the night with my conversations with Aglaki are virtually unreadable, with some vague references mentioning my intense fascination with my hand
