View Full Version : Finally got to the bottom of the forum issues
First, I would like to apologize for the long downtime of CF.NET and the absence of the Alternate History forum. While I was able to bring up the forum, I could not restore the AH forum without losing the last several weeks of discussion as well (as the daily backup function I had automated did not work for the last week).
The good news is that I have figured out what is causing this problem - namely, the MySQL configuration of the host. It seems that the best way to resolve the incessant database error problems is to move to a different host. As a result, I shall be looking into it in the coming weeks, and hopefully I should be able to resolve the issue once and for all.
Thank you for your patience!

Have you thought of getting away from V Bulletin?

Thanks for all your hard work Alex - I'm sure it is appreciated by all here. The loss of posts is as upsetting for you as well as everyone here, but that's the host's fault not yours, so don't feel too bad about it.
The good thing is now that the nature of the issue has been discovered by your efforts, we can hope that the next host is better in that regard. :)

It doesn't look like it's a problem with vBulletin as long as the host is sound. It works perfectly well as long as there's no issue with the host as a number of other sites I frequent that use vBulletin show since they don't lose loads of posts if their host is configured properly. And since we know what the issue is now, we can find a host that doesn't have that issue.

Apparently it is not a vBulletin issue, but an issue with the host (currently Yahoo). I have finally come upon information that was actually useful in my research with details, and it looks like vBulletin is not at fault here.

It is kind of depressing for me to realize how little I have to do. When this place is down I get HOURS of "free" time I have to fill with other things.
BTW, thank you so much for all your hard work, Alex to get this place up and running again:cheers:

That was close to 48 hours of agony. But I'm so very glad it's back up and hope that it stays that way. Thanks for all your hard work Mr. Alex.
The real gratitude should go out to you guys for putting up with me and the technical issues. With a bit more time on my hands in just a week (semester will be over - phew!), I should be able to dedicate some time and energy to locating a different server and figuring out a way to migrate the database there. In a meanwhile, I am open to suggestions for the hosting services and the technical know-how on how to do this.
