From wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peacekeeping#History):

Returning its attention to the conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors, the United Nations responded to Suez Crisis (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Suez_Crisis) of 1956, a war between the alliance of the United Kingdom (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/United_Kingdom), France (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/France), and Israel (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Israel), and Egypt (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Egypt), which was supported by other Arab nations. When a ceasefire (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Ceasefire) was declared in 1957, Canadian (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Canada) diplomat (and future Prime Minister) Lester Bowles Pearson (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Lester_Bowles_Pearson) suggested that the United Nations station a peacekeeping force in the Suez (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Suez) in order to ensure that the ceasefire was honored by both sides. Pearson had initially suggested that the force consist of mainly Canadian soldiers, but the Egyptians were suspicious of having a Commonwealth (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations) nation defend them against the United Kingdom and her allies. In the end, a wide variety of national forces were drawn upon to ensure national diversity. Pearson would win the Nobel Peace Prize (http://www.alternatehistory.net/wiki/Nobel_Peace_Prize) for this work, and he is today considered a father of modern peacekeeping.

Let's suppose that, for whatever reason(s), L. B. Pearson's original idea is accepted.

What would be the consequences?

What would it take to keep it going?

What would be the reactions?

IIRC the reason a multi-national force was chosen instead of a purely Canadian force was in order to prevent any accusations of Imperialism. If Pearson's original idea was accepted I could see Nasser using it as an opportunity to fear-monger and strengthen his own power base within Egypt.

Don't all parties in a conflict have to agree with the make up of a UN contingent?
