Wow, great minds think alike. It was invariably fatal in terms of time management to boot up certain games back then as whole periods of days and nights would just vanish in the blink of an eye. Boy, never say "just one more turn" - that's a guaranteed recipe for never getting away from the damn machine.

Still use snail mail quite a lot. People say I'm quite old world in many ways, especially with my old fashioned styles of writing and fondness for Victorian garb and accessories but I do move with the times as well too. I recall Thande said my writing was like that of an eccentric poet for example. Everything has its place and time depending upon the situation.

Amazingly enough that's very like my 1st game of Civ. Just got it and thought, I'll load it up just before I watch the rugby on TV, i.e. ~2-3pm Saturday. Just have a quick look at it, try a few turns. Two full games later on the basic intro level and 'where's that light coming from' - S**t its ~7am then Aaaaugh as I try and stand up from my chair and the back starts to complain.

Used to play a lot of face to face games and also some play-by-mail, at a time when mail meant old fashioned post. The good old days of youth.

I used to play a lot of boar games as well. Wargames, D&D, that sort of thing. Not doing so much of that these days, but I had a lot of fun years ago with all those genres and so on. I guess the lack of opponents thing applies as well to some extent. I had no shortage of them at school, still a good few at college and enough at university. But these days a bit thin on the ground.

I don't think I ever played Advanced Third Reich although I did play quite a few land based wargames. I certainly played a lot of different naval sims though. Many of them from Avalon Hill.

Ah, I remember the all night sessions. And I remember the first time I played Civilisation on PC back in 1992 down the university computer centre. I went in at 6pm and didn't emerge until around 10am the net day! Luckily they had a drinks machine and a food shop close by, so I didn't run out of sustenance. Ah, those were crazy but fun times.

I've heard of Trekchu. Not sure if I've read his offerings as yet though. Interesting to see he's a pro (liberal) British Empire German chap. Actually reminds me in a way of that Japanese fellow I knew at university who was really into the British and Russian Empires.

Getting around to doing stuff. So many things planned but never enough time for them all! I know the feeling!

It is addictive but more to the point I'm a strategy addict. Used to play a lot of board games face-to-face and only really the lack of opponents means I end up on the PC. The one I liked best, did you ever play Advanced Third Reich, an old Avalon Hill game. Could take a couple of hours to be set up and a couple of weekends to play.

Not sure I have the stamina to do the all night sessions I used to but gods I miss them.

Must admit in ATR I normally played the Germans simply because that was the toughest to win a decisive victory. However looking forward to having a go as Britain once I have a better idea of AoD. The mate who introduced me to it is on the old board as trekchu and has actually played an earlier version of the game, with settings modified, playing as Britain against a Nazi-Soviet alliance, with America basically isolated after a communist take-over. He's put a couple of short stories on the old board which are spin-offs from that world. Very much the ardent worshipper of the British empire [in its more liberal forms]. Only bit he doesn't like is Bomber Command because its raids do so much damage to Germany including his home town.

Very tempted, if/when I have the experience, to try something like that myself but will probably never get around to it.

Ah, I have heard of that game. Haven't actually played it though! But I have heard tale of its addictiveness. I have played Hearts of Iron though and that was damn addictive! It's just so much fun building things up then launching some nice offensives. I tent to cackle evilly a lot when that happens.

Aye, games are not short and take some time. I used to play a lot of strategy games but I don't have as much opportunity these days. I remember when I built up a really good gameplan and then the bloody PC crashed and corrupted my saves. I hate it when that happens.

Kicking Nazi arse. I've spent far too much time doing that in various games.

Apologies for the disappointment about Justinian not being updated today. My updates usually go in sig order. So the lowest one on the sig is the one that gets updated next as it is the oldest then that sig link gets moved to the top immediately after the update and so on. I try to repeat this cycle monthly.

I'm quite flattered that 4 of the threads are mine! Really glad you are enjoying them all though.

The game is Arsenal of Democracy. a spin off of the Hearts of Iron empire. Had an old copy of HOI2 [Hearts of Iron] I never got around to playing and talking with a friend who is family with the HOI empire and he recommended AoD. Had one game as the Soviets which after a couple of false starts was rather a romp. [Built a massive line of fortifications and bled the Germans for 18 months then drove them back, liberating Berlin before the end of 43].

Problem is, while it had a number of problems, it is addictive and very big and complex so takes a lot of time to play. Now my 2nd game is again as the Soviets, with a set of modifications known as Core, which my mate again recommended but which means so much has changed I'm largely starting from scratch again.

Hopefully ideally I will achieve my aim of playing Britain, which I think will be the toughest of the 4 major powers [especially since very vague on what I do with naval forces] and seeing if I can kick some Nazi arse,

Anyway, just come back to the site and seen you're updated Justinian so looking forward to reading that. So far only subscribed to 5 threads. [You know what 4 of them are].

Ah, now which computer game would that be? Pray tell.

Aye, I've noticed you've been busy here in various threads. There's some really good stuff here that's worth checking out as you're hopefully finding.

Fewer people but the good thing is most people know each other here given the size of the community and that sort of makes it have a friendly village like atmosphere which is nice. We do have quite a few well patronised threads across the site in various fora though, and the quality of some replies is pretty damn good too.

I think some TLs are placed in the other area once they are complete and discussion winds up. But as you know with me, I haven't actually finished one yet, so I can't really say much!

To be honest I've been rather busy [AKA addicted to a new computer game] Only generally keeping track of my subscribed threads on the AH board.

Had a brief look through things and have replied to and subscribed to a new thread in the main area which seems interesting and will keep an eye out for new threads.

Get the general idea that there are a lot less people and threads seem to be quite short. Skimming through it seems like a thread with ~30 posts is a long one. [Although it could be that once a TL is completed its put into the other area?].
