For the second, I nominate Day by Day: The Thirties.

Difficult without a verifiable background. And too late to stop the Depression in any event. The bubble is out of control and is going to burst by 1929, it's just a question of when. I cannot imagine any way you could get Hoover to listen to you anyway. More likely you'd end up in a nuthouse. Better to try to position yourself to pick up the pieces when it all goes to hell. Maybe get into aviation and slowly introduce new designs? Or better yet, aircraft engines.

That's a really great point. I definitely could not stop the depression, but my thought was that I might get the government's response to go a little better.

A book on the crash and great depression, a book on WWII and a book on nuclear weapons.

SHOuld the WWII book be overall strategy or weapons?

A good history book that goes as close to modern day as I can find, something with detail instructions about technology that doesn't exist yet but can, and a photo album with pictures of my family, who I'm going to butterfly out of existence but don't want to forget.

What can I put in the suitcase? Can I bring an Iphone, computer? Anything like that?

Thanks for making me 21 again though.

Hitler's government will collapse because he's not anywhere close to prepared for war and the army establishment understands this. They will panic and remove the Nazis. More than this being AH, it was known to all insiders in the German government at the time, including Hitler himself. Even should that fail, if you can convince the French to continue their offensive into West Germany in September 1939 or just let them know the Germans can breach the Ardennes, the European War will end very quickly, and less painfully for everyone.

Even failing this, it's more than possible, with the right connections (on which all possibilities hang) to keep Hitler out of power by leaking important information on what the Nazi Party had already done, and aims to do. I personally am very skeptical of butterflies, but there's a good chance that Hitler's becoming Chancellor will be butterflied away in the four years you will be there in the ATL. It was by no means an inevitable thing.

So what part of the world did you end up in .

The problem with this would be convincing anyone you are not a crackpot doomsayer. With no name or credentials to your name, they would just dismiss you out of hand.

The best solution may just be to write a book predicting things as they will unfold, and then getting notoriety when they happen as predicted.

Well the books are fairly easy;

A book on where all the large gold, coal, oil, diamond, etc. mines are located. The stock market would be tempting, but honestly, thinking long term knowing where the gold is would be useful, after all butterflies effect stock prices, they don't effect geology.

A detailed history book, there was a good one I had in high school, can't remember the name, but it was pretty much a time line of WWII including the lead up (started around 1920 iirc)

An thirdly a book detailing modern aircraft design principles. Nukes are over-rated, having F4s and attack helicopters come WWII? Much more useful.

Where do I get dropped? In the U.S or here in Australia? Because if it's in New York or somewhere I'd be getting on the first boat back home to work on Aussie-wank.

Also be a lot easier to blend in back home, my grandmother was born in 1933 and she doesn't even have a birth certificate, the record keeping of that era left a lot to be desired, so easier to claim I was born in the middle of no-where.

I already know a great deal about building firearms, so I imagine I'll be paying a visit to Evo Owen and hiring him to make me an AK.

Next step would establishing myself, my great-grandfather had a farm equipment repair shop in Sydney, so I'd likely use that as a base of operations, and make sure that if I'm born again my grandfather wont have as many horrible stories to tell about the 30s.

Then I'd start hiring smart people and giving them ideas, I don't need detailed instructions on things like the integrated circuit, just the over-all idea, and then it's off to the races.

After that... well... I think the Australian Commonwealth including all of SE-Asia is a nice start...

1929, Cubs beat the Phillies in 5, "Clyde Van Dusen" wins the Kentucky Derby
1930, A's beat the Cards in 6, "Gallant Fox" wins the Derby and the Triple Crown.

I'm a black man from the deep south, no one's going to believe anything I say so I might as well get rich.

Do that and have a grand time doing it .

Just watch out for the Clan in the deep south and the mid west . You might want to head to Chicago or New Orleans but you would have a better time in Paris until 1939 .

Books! I'd do some customized commissioning of volumes about the size of the biggest dictionary a normal person can lug out of a bookstore.

An archive of the stock market's day to day itemized results from January 1929 to December 1929. This will include prices on commodities, metals, etc.

A detailed volume of world history and geography, from 1925 to 1945. This will include an appendix of biographies of prominent leaders from that time period, including information such as where I would expect to find Adolf Hitler right after the stock market crash.

An almanac of aeronautic and automotive engineering and design circa 2012, with appendices on the Citroen 2CV and Mehari and ultralight airplanes and working with bamboo for various structural purposes. (Ideally, this includes an appendix of schematics/specifications for the Uzi and Kalashnikov firearms.)

I play the market as aggressively as feasible to grow my stash before the crash. Concurrently, I exercise and obtain as much training as feasible in hand to hand combat and operation of portable fire-arms. When feasible, I arrange for myself to be tutored in German.

Then, job one is hunting down Adolf Hitler and ratatatat. This might end up being somewhat expensive, since I might have to consider hiring and equipping a team to accompany me, because getting fatally wounded in the process would be undesirable (for me, at least.)

I start up "KIS (Keep It Simple) Manufacturing" in northern New Jersey, manufacturing simple, durable and inexpensive cars, trucks and planes at affordable prices for the few folks who are still interested in buying vehicles. The car and truck will essentially be a rip-off of the Citroen 2CV and Citroen Mehari. The airplanes are going to be ultralights. I'm buying some property down south for growing as much bamboo as I can get away with so as to provide material for attempting to build ultralights out of that or related material.

A notable goal of KIS Manufacturing will be an ultra-lightweight racing car --I am thinking laminated bamboo frame and body construction with 2CV-like suspension with a relatively lightweight engine-- to compete in Indy 500 and perhaps Formula 1/Grand Prix. The car will have as strong a safety-cage around the driver compartment as possible, metal and/or bamboo, whichever combination works best for protection in a crash.

Is that limitation on electronics to prevent people taking back masses of info outside that in their head and the three books or to prevent anyone taking back items that can 'prove' their case as someone from the future? If the latter then any quiet approach to a significant figure, as in the foresight war is a lot more difficult and you have to play a more hidden hand.

Also presuming that we get the equivalent of wherever we end up in national currency as dollars would be a bit of a pain in many parts of the world?

Not sure that taking back something with a lot of details on say stock market movements, sporting events etc is going to be that reliable beyond a couple of months as butterflies from you're actions could change a lot. [Wouldn't like to bet the farm on a 100-1 shot coming in then finding it comes nowhere, ] Similarly the stock market crash is virtually certain by this point but things are so unstable it could easily happen a bit earlier or later so some speculation there would need to be rained in earlier.

If possible to have sometime to back our story, such as a digital watch then I think I might try a quiet approach to Stanley Baldwin. After an election which has left no party with an overall majority and the Liberals with the balance of power. OTL, according to Wiki the Tories conceded to Labour after failing to agree terms for a coalition with the Liberals. Tempted to try and change that and get some agreement if possible. [Problem is more likely to be distrusted under such circumstances as an imposter than if approaching when not in the middle of a political crisis].

Failing that might try approaching an industrial or scientific leader in Britain and establish some links. Possibly Ernest Rutherford, who by this time a very prominant figure in Britain or one of the big industrial figures. [Alfred Mond with his influence over ICI would be an attractive option except he dies within 6 months and not sure if that could be avoided. ] Might also try contacting Keynes as his knowledge and influence could be useful. Also help him avoid his own personal economic melt-down during the crash, to provide a resource base for later action.

For my 3 books would probably go for:
a) A deep world history covering the 1930's and 40's which would provide background knowledge of a number of areas, as well as hopefully evidence backing what I say.

b) A book on general electronics with sections on developments in WWII, especially radar, early computers for code breaking etc.

c) A detailed study of Britain during WWII including application of resources, technological development and problems that develop, especially paying for the war.

Basically using those to provide additional information and back-ups for what I could remember myself.

If permitted might get some dates for events from the web before I go and write them down as evidence. Thinking of things such as earthquakes and other natural disasters that are difficult/impossible to alter and could provide some evidence I'm not barking mad.

For one I gave Everyone Gold and silver Coins worth $2,012 in 1929 cash .
I limited everyone to what they knew and 3 books to see how resourceful they would be .

Being that most of us will be between 18-21 will limit us on what we can do on a national scale but would not limit us that much on a local scale .

The books I would bring would be my fathers Electronics text book from 1957 which has plans for late war radar and early TV in it , Book Two would be a book I got in the mid 70's on how to make Drugs and has how to make them . Book three would be on weapons with designs of how to make them .

That doesn't answer my question. I know about the funds but whether you would exclude items that provide proof of our story if someone tries going to the authorities, or say a possible business contact, i.e. a digital watch.

Agreed that would be a problem. Especially since in many cases, including my own, I have to explain my sudden loss of age.

Good point on something on medical developments. That would be potentially a huge butterfly, as well as a way to make a lot of money quickly, or at least once the development work was done.
